报告摘要:
Thermoelectric generators which directly convert heat into electricity have long been relegated to use in space or other niche applications, but are now actively considered for a variety of waste heat recovery systems (such the conversion of automobile exhaust heat into electricity) to combat the global energy dilemma Although the devices are supremely reliable and compact, the thermoelectric materials themselves are relatively inefficient requiring advancing the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT above 1.5 for widespread application. In this talk, several strategies to achieve high zT, regarding band structure and phonon engineering, are proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The achieved extraordinary high peak zT of 1.8 and high average zT support the possibility of further development of existing materials. With any luck, the improvements resulting from these approaches will be large enough to promote thermoelectric devices from niche applications into the mainstream technology market.
裴艳中博士简介:
After receiving a B.S. in Materials Sicence & Engineering from Central South University in China, Yanzhong Pei went on to pursue a Ph.D in Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and was advised by Prof. Lidong Chen. After graduation, He spent a year at Michigan State University as research associate with Prof. Donald. Morelli. Currently. Dr. Pei is currently a senior postdoctoral fellow in Materials Science at Caltech working with Dr. G. Jeffrey Snyder. Since a graduate student starting in 2003, all his work is focusing on the synthesis and characterization of new thermoelectric materials for waste heat recovery applications. Now he has published more than 20 papers on the top-tier journals such as Nature, Adv. Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., Adv. Energ. Mater., Appl. Phys. Lett..
